Welcome to my web-site. My hope is that you enjoy your
stay here and leave with the feeling that you have not only connected with my work but
through it with me as well.
Let me introduce myself. I was born in 1947 in a small town on the plains of North Central Kansas. From a very early age I have drawn and painted horses, ships, people, landscapes, and maps of magical lands somewhere over the rainbow. My curiosity compelled me to explore avid interests in art, archaeology, anthropology, geology, music, history, and literature. All of these elements have influenced my imagination and been brought to the surface in my paintings and drawings.
In 1965 I entered Fort Hays State University to study art and graduated with my BA in 1969. After a short but enriching stay in New York City I was drafted into the US Army. There I was an illustrator until my discharge at which time I initiated graduate work earning my MA and education certificate in 1974.
Teaching secondary arts was a challenge and a joy that encompassed my life for eleven years before moving to the North West and striking out on my own. Since then I have participated in the vibrant arts community here, broadening my arts knowledge, sharpening my painting skills, developing my own style, and firing my passion for two main avenues of expression: figurative and maritime painting.
Throughout my life I have been struck by the wonder, beauty, and mystery of the female gender so it was natural for me to convey this in my figurative paintings. For me, the feminine is the ultimate in knowable beauty and the giver of life, love, compassion, and wisdom. Nude or clothed, I paint them in the beauty of this truth as I see it. This genre not only expresses my admiration for women but also involves at times those other interests that fascinate me from an early age. An outgrowth of this genre has been portraits and especially bio-graphical portraits in which the individual is ensconced in elements and symbols of their own personalities, history, and interests so that the portrait is more than just a face.
The other side of the painting coin is my passion and interest in ships and the sea. My paintings and renderings of ships are meticulously researched and painted to be as accurate a depiction as possible. They are generally in two main groups; profiles and action scenes that can also have figurative elements and concepts. The profiles are all rendered to scale to enable comparisons of historical and engineering developments. The sailing ships especially are accurate and complete down to the last detail.
I have won awards in both the fine art and maritime genre in shows and exhibits in the region, nationally, and internationally. Commissions for portraits, biographical portraits, and ships are welcomed. Please contact me for more information.
